What size refrigeration condenser do I actually need for my cold storage project?

You would be surprised how often we get this question. It depends on two things: your compressor and your location.

A refrigeration condenser needs to reject more heat than the compressor produces. Simple enough. But how much more varies with your climate. If your summers push past 40°C, go one size up. We have seen too many systems struggle because someone tried to save a few hundred dollars on the condenser.

Air-cooled or evaporative refrigeration condenser — which one is right for me?

Mostly comes down to your climate.

Air-cooled is what we recommend for most projects. No water hookups, no chemical treatment, no worrying about water quality. They just work.

Evaporative refrigeration condensers use less power, and that is a real advantage in hot, dry areas — the Middle East, Central Asia, inland Australia. But they need a steady water supply and consistent water quality management. It is not a set-it-and-forget-it solution.

Our take: Air-cooled for the vast majority. Go evaporative only if you are in a dry, hot climate with cheap water.

What is the ideal distance between the refrigeration condenser and the compressor?

The shorter the pipe run, the better.

For air-cooled refrigeration condensers, we like to keep it under 30 meters. Beyond that, things start to go sideways. Efficiency drops, oil return becomes a problem, and you may need bigger pipes or an oil separator you did not budget for.

If your layout forces a longer run, tell us before you order. We have dealt with this before, and we can design around it.

Can the refrigeration condenser cause compressor failures?

Yes, and we see this more often than we would like.

When the refrigeration condenser is undersized or dirty, discharge pressure goes up. Higher pressure means higher temperature, and higher temperature breaks the oil down faster. Once the oil degrades, the compressor is the first thing to suffer.

If you are replacing compressors more often than you should, start with the refrigeration condenser. Nine times out of ten, that is where the problem starts.
