Which defrosting method should I choose for the cold room evaporator: electric, hot gas, or water?

For small cold rooms—say under a hundred square meters—electric defrost is the simplest, cheapest option for a cold room evaporator. For larger rooms, hot gas defrost makes more sense because it uses heat from the compressor instead of drawing extra power. If you’re running a high-humidity operation like a seafood freezing room, water defrost is fastest; the frost just washes off.

Quick rule: electric for small cold room evaporators, hot gas for big ones, water for wet environments.

Should I choose a unit cooler or an aluminum tube evaporator for your cold room?

Go with a unit cooler if you need fast cooling, open the doors a lot, or don’t have ceiling space for hanging coils. Go with an aluminum tube cold room evaporator if you’re worried about product drying out (it cuts moisture loss by 1–2%), want to save on fan electricity, or run an ammonia system. Large cold rooms can mix both types of cold room evaporators.
